يعد الطوسي، مصنف هذا الكتاب، أعلم أهل زمانه، وعلاوة على ذلك فقد أدى للحضارة الإسلامية عملين عظيمين: أولهما أنه بذل جهداً كبيراً للمحافظة على الكتب النفيسة والآثار حتى لا يهلكها المغول، مما أتاح له أن يجمع مكتبه تحوي أربعمائة ألف مجلد، والثاني أنه استخدم نفوذه عند هولاكو لينقذ من الهلاك كثيرين من أهل العلم والأدب، وله ما يقرب من ثلاثة ومائة كتاب ورسالة ومقالة في موضوعات وفنون مختلفة، وفي هذا الكتاب يتناول الطوسي عالم المنطق مجرداً أصوله ومسائله على الترتيب، تجريداً راعى فيه الإيجاز كي يتيسر للحافظ تكرارها، وللطالب تذكارها، جاعلاً تلك الأصول مرتبة في تسعة فصول، الأول منها في مدخل هذا العلم، الثاني في المقولات، الثالث في القضايا وأحوالها، الفصل الرابع في القياس، والخامس في الدهان والحد، والسادس في الجدل والسابع في المغالطة، والفصلين الثامن والتاسع جاءا في الخطابة وفي الشعر.
