ل ماذا "نبع مريم"؟ ولماذا "وادي النطرون"؟ الحقيقة أن "نبع مريم" هو المكان الذي عطشت فيه السيدة العذراء أثناء مرورها بوادي النطرون في رحلة العائلة المقدسة إلى مصر، فذهبت إلى منطقة الملَّاحات ومدت يدها لتشرب فصار ماؤها عذبًا ولا يزال حتى يومنا هذا، ومن هنا أطلق عليه "نبع مريم"، ومع الوقت تغير اسمه إلى "نبع الحمراء". أما لماذا "وادي النطرون"؟ فلأن رهبان المسيحية الأولى سكنوا في هذا الوادي المعروف باسم "برية شيهيت". وكان هذا الوادي ذا طبيعة خاصة لأنه يُعد حصنًا دفاعيًا واستراتيجيًا لصد المغيرين على حدود مصر نتيجة الانتهاكات وأعمال السلب التي كانت تحدث من وقت لآخر. أما لماذا استقرت الرهبنة في "وادي النطرون"؟ فذلك حديث آخر تميزت به المسيحية في كنيسة الإسكندرية التي قامت على فكرة الرهبنة أي أن يخلو الراهب في "قلاية" في الصحراء يتفرغ فيها للتنسك والعبادة، وكانت "القلايات" جزءًا من الأديرة التي بناها الأوائل من المسيحيين الذين فرّوا من اضطهاد "هيرودوس" للمسيحية في بداية ظهورها. وكانت مصر مهجرهم، وكان الطريق إلى مصر يعني الاستقرار في "وادي النطرون" الذي باركته العائلة المقدسة.
