يتميز وادى النطرون فى تاريخ مصر بالعديد من أوجه الأهمية، فعندما نتذكر هذا الوادى نستعيد صوراً مجيدة لتاريخ المسيحية "القبطية" المصرية. هذا الوادى الذى احتضن العديد من الأديرة القبطية، وساعد على الحفاظ على الطابع القبطى لتاريخنا المتعدد الأبعاد، ولم تكن هذه الأديرة أماكن للعزلة عن العالم، بل كانت بمثابة منارات روحية وعلمية. وأتذكر من خلال قراءاتى فى كتابات الرحالة الغربيين إلى وادى النطرون، محاولاتهم المتكررة لجلب المخطوطات القبطية والعربية المحفوظة فى هذه الأديرة، حيث احتفظت مكتبات هذه الأديرة بالآلف منها، ولكن العديد منها تسرب للأسف إلى المكتبات الغربية. إن هذا الوادى يعتبر فى الحقيقة متحفاً مفتوحاً لحياة الرهبنة والديرية، هذه الرهبنة التى كانت هدية مصر إلى العالم المسيحى.
