لم يتسلل وانج لانج إلى عالم الموت في سهولة ويسر كما فعل أبوه الهرم من قبل. حقًّا كانت روحه تتأهب للرحيل على الطريق عدة مرات، بيد أن جسده القوي العجوز تمرد عليها في كل مرة، مصرًّا على التخلف عنها حتى تأفل شمس اليوم. وحين بدأ الصراع بين الروح والجسد ذعر وانج لانج للمعركة التي شعر بها تدور في أعماقه، فقد كان دائمًا جسدًا أكثر منه روحًا. كان رجلًا بدينًا، يفيض حيوية وقوة يوم كان في أوج شبابه، فلم يكن في مقدوره أن يسمح لجسده بالرحيل في تهاون واستخفاف، وإذا شعر بروحه تتسلل بعيدًا، استبد به الخوف، فراح يصرخ كالأطفال في صوت لاهث أجش، دون أن ينبس ببنت شفة. وكلما صرخ على هذا النحو، كانت بيربلوسوم الشابة، التي تجلس بجواره ليل نهار، تمد ذراعها، وتربت بيدها الشابة ملاطفة يده العجوز، في حين يسرع ولداه إليه ليبثا السكينة في قلبه، بسرد الروايات التي تدور حول حفل الجناز الذي سيقيمانه من أجله، ويرددان على سمعه مرة تلو الأخرى كل ما ينتويان القيام به، وينحني الابن الأكبر بجسمه الضخم المطلو بالأطلس، على جسد والده ليهمس له بخطة الأبناء.
