يفتتح إدواردو غاليانو (1940) كتابه «أبناء الأيام» بيوم سقوط غرناطة (2 كانون الثاني/1492) وهو الحدّ الفاصل بين إسبانيا المسلمة، وبداية انتصار محاكم التفتيش المقدّسة. يختار الكاتب الأوروغواياني أحداثاً مفصلية في توثيق الذاكرة الكونية، موزعاً إياها على عدد أيام السنة. يهدي اليوم الأول في السنة إلى شعب المايا الذي يؤمن بأن الزمن فضاء، فيما الأيام هي التي تصنع الأشخاص الذين بدورهم يولّدون الحكايات، وتالياً، فنحن «أبناء الأيام». حكايات وشذرات مكثّفة ومفارِقة في التقاط مشهديات لأشخاص ووقائع غيّروا مصير العالم. هكذا يرصد غاليانو بعدسة مقرّبة وجوهاً وأحداثاً واعترافات عن الحب، والموسيقى، والموت، والكتب، والمجازر، والديكتاتوريات... عالم يتأرجح من عصر الكهوف إلى اليوم، كما لو أنه شاشة عرض في قاعة مظلمة تبث أرشيفاً سريّاً عن محاولات «سرقة الذاكرة». ما يفعله صاحب «أفواه الزمن» هو تشريح واقع مثقل بالظلمات والعار، وتعرية الغزاة والصيارفة والأباطرة والقوى المهيمنة في العالم.
