يبحث في الأصول التي اتبعت في رسم مختلف أنواع العمارة الإيطالية، الرومانية الأصل، المؤسسة على أشكال عمارة الإغريق، مع تحوير في الهيئة العامة للأبنية. ويرجع تاريخ العصر الروماني إلى سنة 753ق.م ، حين كانت عشائر الإتروريين تقطن ما بين نهري الآرنو والتيبر عند الساحل الغربي لإيطاليا ، وقد وصلت إلى ذروة المجد فكان لها شأن عظيم في ترقية الفن الروماني. وكان الإتروريون يبنون بحجارة عظيمة الحجم بدقة متناهية، ولا تزال الأطلال الموجودة في بعض المعابد التي بقيت ولم يعف أثرها تشهد لهم بذلك. وكانوا أيضاً ينحتون الصخر إما بأن يقطعوا منه تماثيل هائلة الحجم، وإما بأن يقطعوا فيه على هيئة غار كبير تزخرف جدرانه وسقوفه بنقوشات محفورة في الصخر.
