نشأ أخوان الصفا في البصرة، في القرن العاشر الميلادي والرابع الهجري. وكان هؤلاء من العلماء الفضلاء تصادقوا وتصافوا، وكتموا أسماءهم عن الناس. وأما مذهبهم فنسبه بعضهم إلى الشيعة، بينما نسبهم آخرون إلى المعتزلة. وكانت غايتهم وضع مذهب يجمع بين الفلسفة اليونانية والإسلام وذلك من خلال خمسين رسالة عرضوا فيها جميع أجزاء الفلسفة، ونشروها باسم إخوان الصفا. والطابع الغالب على هذه الرسائل التي يشرحها الكاتب في هذا الكتاب هي الدعوة إلى الزهد، وإلى يقظة النفس من رقدة الجهالة، والعمل على النجاة من بحر الهيولّى، مما يسبغ على كل الرسائل مسحة دينية صوفية، ويجعل إخوان الصفا يبحثون في كل ما يبحثون وهم يرمون إلى هذه الغاية ويسعون إلى كمال الروح.
