في باب الحمامة المطوقة من كتاب كليلة ودمنة ذكر أن دبشليم الملك قال لبيديا الفيلسوف: «حدثني أن رأيت عن إخوان الصفاء كيف يبتدئ تواصلهم ويستمتع بعضهم ببعض», فقال الفيلسوف: «إن العاقل لا يعدل بالإخوان شيئاً». ولما كان كتاب كليلة ودمنة من الكتب التي شاعت أيام ظهور جماعة إخوان الصفاء, فإن المستشرق جولدزيهر قد رجح أن اسم إخوان الصفاء قد نقل من هذا الكتاب, نظراً إلى ما جاء في باب الحمامة المطوقة من الحديث عن الغيرية والتضحية اللازمين للصداقة الخالصة,. ولقد ذهب غير جولدزيهر من الباحثين إلى التماس أصل آخر للتسمية فقال قوم أن الصفاء مقتبس من التصوف الذي غايته صفاء النفس ونقاء القلب, وقال آخرون إنه آتي من العشرة الصافية والصداقة النقية. وأياً ما كان الأمر فإن إخوان الصفا وخلان الصفا– كما كان يحلو لهم تسمية أنفسهم بإسقاط الهمزة من الصفاء والوفاء– أصدقاء أوفياء أصفياء, توادوا وتحابوا, أقبلوا على العلم وتعاونوا فيه.
