لم يقتصر (تجوال) على يوميات الحرب، بل استطاع ان يقدم نموذجاً للإنسان المسائر بشكل دائم بحثاً عن الخلاص، ولكن بأسلوب غير مباشر، ومن طرق خفي يشير هسة إلى مرضه في هذا الكتاب. فالتجوال من أهم العوامل التي خفت بها عن قنوطه ويأسه واضطرابه فيقول: لقد غدا العالم أجمل, روغم أني وحيد فإنني لا أشكو من هذه الوحدة. لا أريد للحياة أن تكون غير ما هي عليه. وإني لعلى استعداد أن أتركني أخبز تحت الشمس، حتى أقضي بي لهف عارم لأن أنضج وعلى أهبة أنا للموت، وللولادة من جديد لقد غدا العالم أجمل.
