وفى غرفة معيشة السيدة كلارينزا - توجد امرأة منافقة وساخطة، زوجة فيديريجو، وهو سياسي معارض انتهازي - وهي محور الرواية وتحكي عن إيطاليا حديثة الولادة. فى الصورة الكبيرة" التي تصبح صورة كاريكاتورية لبرجوازية ما بعد عصر النهضة في التصوير الشعاعي، و جميعها ملتزمة بالحفاظ على المكانة والمظهر. وتظهر المؤامرات السياسية والسلطة والمال والحب محبوسة في عالم مكتوم يغذيه عدد من الفرص والامتيازات الشخصية والتوصيات العائلية.
