وفي هذه الرواية؛ يتواجد الشاب شارلوك هولمز في غرب إيرلندا، ولكن؛ ليس بهدف تمضية عطلة، بل برفقة شقيقه مايكروفت، الذي حضر بصفته ممثلاً للحكومة البريطانية كي يتحقق من مزاعم أحد علماء النفس الذي يدّعي قدرته على التواصل مع الجواسيس الأموات.
سيضع ذلك العالِم خدماته في تصرف من يقدم أعلى سعر في مزايدة ستجرى بهذا الشأن. تتمثل مهمة مايكروفت وشارلوك في التأكد إن كان هذا العالِم قادراً بالفعل على كشف الأسرار التي تخفيها القبور؛ تلك الأسرار التي ترغب الحكومات الأوروبية بتركها طيّ الكتمان.
لكن، أحدهم يسعى إلى إسكات ذلك العالِم. ففي البداية، وُجدت إحدى الخادمات ميتة، ثم تعرض مايكروفت لاعتداء وحشي. لذا، يُفترض بشارلوك هولمز التحرك لكشف اللغز الذي صعق الجميع قبل أن يُقتل شخص آخر.
تتألف سلسلة كتب "الشابّ شارلوك هولمز" من الروايات التالية: "سحابة الموت"، و"نيران التمرّد"، و"الجليد الأسود"، و"عاصفة اللهب"، و"لدغة الأفعى"، و"حد السكين" و"برودة القبر".
