وفي الرواية: خُطف شارلوك وأُرسل على متن سفينة متجهة إلى الصين، وعندما وصل، وجد نفسه متورطاً في مغامرة؛ حيث توجب عليه حل لغز يتمثل بمقتل ثلاثة رجال بلدغات أفعى سامة، في ثلاثة أماكن مختلفة من مدينة شانغهاي.
والسؤال الذي يطرح نفسه هو: من يقف وراء مقتل أولئك الأشخاص الثلاثة؟ ولماذا؟ الجواب يكمن في حلّ لغز الرسوم البيانية التي كانت على شكل بيت عنكبوت. ولكن حلّ هذا اللغز يطرح سؤالاً أكثر إلحاحاً، ألا وهو: ما علاقة هذه الرسوم البيانية بالمؤامرة التي تستهدف السفينة الحربية الأمريكية؟
وكعادته، سيواجه شارلوك المصاعب والمخاطر بمهارته المعتادة. إنه شارلوك هولمز، وإذا كنت تظن أنك تعلم عنه وعن مغامراته فيجدر بك التفكر بالأمر مرة أخرى.
يُذكر، أن الروائي “أندرو لين” كاتب وصحافي أيضاً. كان طوال حياته من المعجبين بشخصية شارلوك هولمز، شغفه بالروايات الأصلية التي ألفها السير آرثر كونان دويل، وعزمه على ابتكار شخصية شارلوك هولمز في سن المراهقة، مكّناه من العمل على إرث كونان دويل، لإعادة إحياء شخصية المحقق الأكثر شهرة في العالم؛ ولكن كشاب في سن المراهقة، وقد لاقى عمله نجاحاً تجارياً كبيراً، ونال إشادة النقاد. يعيش أندرو لين في دورست مع زوجته وولده.
تتألف سلسلة كتب “الشاب شارلوك هولمز” من الروايات الآتية: “سحابة الموت”، “نيران التمرّد”، “الجليد الأسود”، “عاصفة اللهب”، “لدغة الأفعى”، “حد السكين” و”برودة القمر”.
