يدخل الكتاب ضمن كتب الأدب العام الذي دأب الأدباء المسلمون على التصنيف فيه بوصفه مجالا رحبا لعرض الأفكار والآداب والعلوم. فالكتاب يشمل الشعر بمختلف أغراضه، والنثر بتعدد ألوانه؛ رسالةً ومقامةً وتوقيعًا وأخبارًا وحكايات وقصصًا.
ويركز الكتاب في جوهره على تناول جميع القضايا التي تهتم بالطير في الثقافة الإسلامية، وهو ما يعكس جانبا من الجوانب الحضارية التي اهتمت بها المسلمون، والتي قد لا نجد لها مثيلا عند بقية الأمم في العصر نفسه.
كما يتضمن الكتاب جملة من المواقف الفقهية إزاء بعض القضايا التي كانت تشغل العقل المسلم في ذلك العصر، مثل انتشار البدع والأفكار المنحرفة، والغلو والتطرف، فيرد المؤلف على أصحاب الشبهات والعقائد الفاسدة، مستدلا بأقوال من سبقه من العلماء.
