يقال إن التاريخ الحقيقي للشعوب يكمن في أدبها، ومن أجل هذا حاولت في هذا الكتاب أن أقدم للقارئ مجموعة من الأدباء الذين نستطيع أن نقرأ في أعمالهم تاريخ شعوبهم وتحولات أوطانهم، أدباء عرب وأجانب استطاعوا أن يقدموا لأنفسهم وأوطانهم حالة من التميز والقدرة على الوجود الحقيقي، هذا بجانب قراءة لواحد من الشعراء الفاعلين وعنوانها "أمل دنقل.. بين الموروث الديني والرفض" فهناك عدة زوايا ينظر الشاعر العربى من خلالها إلى التراث، وربما تنحصر فى التراث الشعبي، والمرايا، والأقنعة، والتراث الأسطوري، وقد استفاد أمل دنقل من هذه الزوايا استفادة كبيرة فى تكوين رؤيته وخلق إبداعه بشكل عام، إلا أنه تبدو صورة «القناع» الأكثر شيوعا وشفافية وحضورا فى شعر أمل دنقل، وظلت الزاوية المثلى فى تشكيله الفنى ورؤيته الشعرية. ويبدو أن أفكار الكارثة التى حلت بالعالم العربى بعد هزيمة ١٩٦٧، أصابت أمل دنقل بما يطلق عليه الردة التاريخية، كرد فعل طبيعى لما خلفته الكارثة من آثار وشروخ فى الذات العربية، ربما يكون أهمها فقدان الهوية، ويسعى «أمل» إلى تحقيق هدفين من خلال هذه العودة التاريخية تذكير الناس عبر بعث الحياة فى الذاكرة التاريخية، لمواجهة حالة الشك فى الذات، والحديث عن الواقع المعاصر عبر رموز تراثية.
