تتناول هذه الدراسة الحديثية المتخصصة في علم الجرح والتعديل تعقبات الحافظ ابن حجر – في كتابه لسان الميزان – على الإمام شمس الدين الذهبي - في كتابة ميزان الاعتدال – في عدة جوانب منها: التزام الذهبي بشرطه في كتابه، وضبط لبعض أسماء الرواة وتواريخ ولادتهم ووفياتهم، والحكم على وثاقة بعض الرواة، وتصحيح بعض الأحاديث وتضعيفها، والتدقيق في النقل عن بعض الأئمة، إلى غير ذلك من مسالك التعقب. ولما كانت تعقبات الحافظ ابن حجر على الإمام الذهبي في لسان الميزان من الكثرة بمكان فقد قام الباحث بتتبعها وجمعها في هذه الدراسة، ومناقشتها بتجرّد وموضوعية، مع التحقق من وجه الصواب في ضبط أسماء الرواة وتخريج الأحاديث والآثار والحكم عليها، وبيان معاني الألفاظ الغريبة ومصطلحات العلماء الواردة في نصوص تلك التعقبات، معتمداً في ذلك كله على المصادر الأصيلة الوثيقة.
