اعتنى أهل العلم بدراسة السّنة النبوية بجانب القرآن الكريم، فمنهم من ألّف على طريقة المسانيد، ومنهم من رتب كتبة على الكتب والأبواب، ومن العلماء من اعتنى مع رواية الحديث بيان أحوال الرجال من حيث الجرح والتعديل.
وسلك الحافظ الذهبي في كتابه "معرفة الرواة المتكلم فيهم بما لا يوجب السرد" مسلكاً متميزاً، وهو من قبيل الكتب التي أُلفت للدفاع عن السّنة النبوية وحملتها وأهلها؛ فقد صاغه في منهج في غاية من الدقة. فهو يسوق قول الجارح تحت ترجمة الراوي المتكلم فيه بما لا يوجب ردّ روايته، ثم يبيّن إحدى طرق الإستدلال أن هذا القول لا ينهض لرد رواية المتكلم فيه فمثلاً يأتي بقول الجارح أولاً ويكون في الغالب من المتشددين، ثم يتبعه بقول أحد المعتدلين من علماء هذا الشأن، ويدلل على أن قول المشدّد مردود، وتارة يتعقب بنفسه قول الجارح المتشدد - وردت الأمثلة في هذا الكتاب - وتارة يكون الجرح بسبب تغير في حال الراوي مثل الكبر في السن أو احتراق كتب الراوي، وتارة يكون الجرح ناتجاً عن اختلاف في جانب من العقيدة بين المتكلم فيه والمتكلم مثل التشيع، والقدر، والرفض، والإرجاء. وبما أن علماء الحديث وضعوا قواعد محكمة في مصطلح الحديث، حسم الذهبي الموقف على ضوء هذه القواعد المتفق عليها بين أهل السنة.
ولأهمية هذا الأثر في الدفاع عن السّنة وحملتها، دأب على تحقيقه والتعليق عليه "أبو عبد الله إبراهيم سعيد أبي إدريس" في قسمين: القسم الأول تناول فيه ترجمة المؤلف، والكتاب وموضوعه ونسبته للمؤلف الذهبي، وأصله الخطي. وأما القسم الثاني فتضمن تحقيق المخطوطة وتقويم النص وضبط أعلامه وعزو مصادر التراجم لأصحابها ووضع الفهارس.
