حفظ الذهبي القرآن في الصغر, وأتقنه بالقراءات السبع على شيوخ دمشق, ولم يقنع حتى نالها من بعض كبار القراء خارجها. واعتنى ـ قراءةً وسماعاً ـ بعدد من الكتب المصنّفة فيها, مع حرص على الأسانيد العالية. إلا أنه انصرف عن هذا العلم مبكّراً إلى الحديث والتاريخ ليستغرقا بقية حياته, وإن كان أثراه فيما بعد بكتابه «معرفة القرّاء» .
وكان الذهبي ينظم كثيرًا من كتبه التاريخية على الطبقات, فنظم «تاريخ الإسلام» على سبعين طبقة، بينما جاء كتابه «المعرفة» في تراجم القرّاء في سبع عشرة طبقة, ونظم كتابه «سير النبلاء» على خمس وثلاثين طبقة فكان وسيطًا بينهما، وهكذا كتبه الأخرى.
واللافت للنظر أن الذين ترجم لهم الذهبي في كتبه هم ـ غالبًا ـ أهل مدّة زمنية واحدة، ومع ذلك فقد جاء عدد الطبقات في كل كتاب من كتبه مغايرًا للآخر في العدد وكميّة المترجمين! وهذا أمر استرعى أبصار العلماء والباحثين, فوقفوا منه مواقف شتّى بين معتذر له, ومتحيِّر من صنيعه.
وقد كانت عناية المهتمين بحياة الذهبي مقتصرة على جانبي الحديث والتاريخ, فجاء هذا البحث في فصله الأول ليبرز شخصيّته الإقرائية, وجاء في فصله الثاني بقسميه النظري والتطبيقي ليوضح معنى الطبقة عنده في كتاب «معرفة القرّاء».
