كان للقراءات في بلاد الشام - خاصّة دمشق - مدارس عامرة، ورواد كبار، خدموها إقراءً وتنظيراً وتصنيفاً على مدى أربعة عشر قرناً، بدءاً بمدرسة التابعي الجليل عبد الله بن عامر الدمشقي، المنبثقة من مدرسة أبي الدرداء، ومروراً بمدارس شيوخ القراء الكبار، ثم إنتهاءً بمدرسة الشيخ أحمد الحلواني الكبير.
ظلت دمشق موئل القراء، وكعبة طلاب العلم منذ الفتح الإسلامي إلى اليوم، ومع الضعف الذي اعترى الأمة، فقد بقيت شامخة، عصيَّة على الصعاب.
هذا وقد نقل عن الطبري، طعن صريح في إسناد قراءة ابن عامر الدمشقي، حيث أنكر أن يكون قد أسند قراءته عن أحد من الصحابة.
كما حفلت مجالس الدمشقيين - خاصة العلماء - قبيل نحو قرن بكلام ملخصَّه، خلو دمشق من القراء المتخصصين بالقراءات مدة طويلة، وإندثار مدارسها، وأن الشيخ أحمد الحلواني المتوفى (1307هـ) هو الذي جدد القراءات فيها.
ثم أضحى ذلك الكلام تاريخاً مسطوراً بأيدي المؤرخين، وشعراً بليغاً ينشد في المناسبات.
واكتفى العلماء والباحثون بتصديق ذلك الكلام دون تمحيصه أو البحث عن حقيقته.
وقد جاء هذا البحث في فصله الأول ليردَّ دعوى الطبري، وجاء في فصله الثاني ليدفع ما قيل من إنقطاع وإندثار، وذلك من خلال سبر لتاريخ القراءات في القرنين الحادي عشر، والثاني عشر، ومنتصف القرن الثالث عشر، والدراسة في نتيجتها دفاع عن تاريخ القراءات في دمشق الشام.
