بين طيات هذا الكتاب صفحات تترجم للحافظ الذهبي حيث يتحدث الفصل الأول منها عن سيرة موجزة للإمام الذهبي: ويشتمل على ذكر لقبه، وكنيته، واسمه، آبائه، ونسبته، ومذهبه، وتضلعه في عدة فنون، وزمن ولادته، وطلبه للعلم، ورحلاته فيه، وانتقائه لشيوخه، واشتغاله بالتصنيف والتخريج والتدريس، وزمن وفاته، وأولاده.
ثم أتبع ذلك بذكر نبذ من أقوال الأئمة في الثناء عليه، والإشادة بعظيم شأنه، وختم هذا الفصل بنقل ترجمته لنفسه من معجمه المختص وهي تدل على غاية تواضعه.
الفصل الثاني: التذييل والتعقيب والاستدراك على ما ذكره الأستاذ الدكتور بشار عواد معروف من تصانيف الذهبي وآثاره. وهذا الفصل يشتمل على مبحثين:
المبحث الأول: الإشارة إلى الأوهام مع تصحيحها، وزيادة فوائد لم يتوصل إليها.
المبحث الثاني: تسمية الكتب والرسائل والأجزاء والتخاريج التي لم يهتد إليها، وقد قاربت الأربعين.
