أكثر الكتب التي أُلفت في موضوع البدعة – مع إفادته – خالية من التأصيل والتقعيد غير جارية على قواعد الفقهاء ولا منضبطة بمسالك أهل الأصول، مع كون موضوع البدعة صعبا من حيث هو، وهذا ما اعترف به الإمام المجتهد ابن دقيق العيد حين قال وهو يتحدثّ عن موضوع البدعة وضوابطها: "فهذا ما أمكن ذكره في هذا الموضوع، مع كونه من المشكلات القوية، لعدم الضبط فيه بقوانين تقدم ذكرها للسابقين، وقد تباين الناس في هذا الباب تبايناً شديداً". وأكّد ذلك الإمام الشاطبي عند بيانه سبب تأليفه لكتاب الاعتصام فقال: " لأني رأيتُ باب البدع في كلام العلماء مُغْفَلاً جداً؛ إلا من النقل الجلي كما نقل ابن وضّاح، أو يؤتي بأطراف من الكلام لا يشفى الغليل بالتفقّه فيه كما ينبغي، ولم أجد على شدة بحثي عنه إلا ما وضع فيه أبو بكر الطرطوشي، وهو يسير في جنب ما يحتاج إليه فيه". ثم إنّ قضايا محورية في موضوع البدعة كدخول القياس في العبادات، ودخول البدعة في أمور العادات، والاحتجاج بالترك، وضوابط رد المحدَثات؛ لم تبحث أو بحثت دون استقصاء للأدلة والأقوال، وهذا ما جعلَ الباحث يقف أمام شح في المصادر. وحيث إنّ الموضوع على هذا القدر من الحاجة للبيان والتأصيل فقد جاء هذا الكتاب الذي نرجو أن يكون إضافةً جديدةً في بابه.
