بمجرد ان مات السيد نانى واقام القسيس الصلاة عليه اندلع الصراع بين الاولاد على من يدفع مصاريف الجنازة . لأن مرض السيد نانى كانت مدته طويلة. ففى كل مرة كان الدكتور يكتب روشتة الدواء كان السيد نانى ينظر اليه ويطلب منه الا يكتب قائمة طويلة من الأدوية لقلة الموارد النقدية .ولكن الدكتور كان يقوم بعمله . وقد اصيب السيد نانى بالحمى فى بلدة لاميا . هذه الأرض المقدسة.
وكان له أخوات كثيرين من نفس الأب. ولكنه كان يفكر فى حاله. فقد كان ابنه سانتو لديه زوجة وأولاد مسئولين منه ؛ وكانت لوتشا ابنته بدون نقود لتجهيزها و كان كارمينيو ابنه الصغير يريد ان ياكل عيش لذا فقد خرج للبحث عن عمل. والأم كانت عجوز ومريضة و لم تكن تعرف من سيعولها فهم الثلاثة لم يكن لديهم شىء . وكانت الابقار والعجول تذهب مع اصحابها ويبقى المنزل خالى مع الأيتام. وكان سانتو قد نقل كل حاجياته مع زوجته روسا وطلب منها ان تعيش مع امه .
