فى الحقيقة فإن البيت بظلامه كان يبدو موحش فى هذا الهدوء الرهيب. وكان يسمع فقط فى بعض الاحيان صوت مرور رجل مخمور او مرور عربة تهز زجاج النافذة . وفى النهار كل النوافذ تكون مغلقة وتبدو غامضة . وفى بلكونة الغرفة الصفراء كان يوجد اناء به زهر القرنفل يموت من عدم الاهتمام به ومائل على الحائط المندى ويهتز بفعل الرياح الدائمة.
وعند الغروب كانت هناك عصا أمام الباب خلف زجاج النافذة الذى كان يطل على الغرف وكان النور يضاء ايضا بالنهار فى الغرف العادية. وكان هناك رجل عجوز بشعر أبيض يستند على عصا يهز رأسه بالايجاب عندما يرد على فتاة تنزل وراءه لترافقه حتى الباب. وكانت تجيب هى أيضأ هى بايماءة من رأسها وعيونها حائرة. وعندما يرحل العجوز كانت تعود الى غرفتها.
