"في تلك السنة بالذات، وكان الفصل ربيعاً على ما أظن، أخذ أبي يحدثني عن غرناطة، وسوف يفعل ذلك في المستقبل ويستبقيني ساعات إلى جانبه من غير أن ينظر إليّ قط، أو يعرف ما إذا كنت أصغي إليه، أو إذا كنت أفهم، أو إذا كنت أعرف الأشخاص والأمكنة. وكان يتربع في جلسته ويشرق وجهه ويتموج صوته ويتلاشى تعبه وغضبه، وما هي إلا دقائق أو ساعات حتى يغدو قصاصاً. ولم يكن حينئذٍ في فاس، ولا على الأخص داخل هذه الجدران العابقة بالنتن والعفن. فلقد كان يسافر في ذاكرته ولا يعود إلا على مضض".
يوغل الإنسان في الحنين... أو يلفه الحنين لا فرق... فالأمر سيّان... فكلاهما انتزاع... وكأنه انتزاع أول للروح من مهادها من موئلها... من وطنها... وغرناطة تلك المتربعة على جدران التاريخ... ينتزع أمين معلوف صورها المأساوية... يطوف بها في رحاب الحلم حيناً... وفي وهم الحقيقة أحياناً... صور غرناطة تلك يختطفها خياله... يثريها يزرعها بألف معنى ومعنى... ويسير مع الراحل من أرض غرناطة كتلك وكأنه الراحل عن الدنيا... يسير مع ذاك الراحل والهارب بدينه بعيداً عن أولئك الغازين الذين أبَوْا أن يتركوا لغرناطة روعتها... وأبَوْا أن يتركوا للغرناطيين حريتهم... ولكنهم وإن رحلوا "فإن هؤلاء الرجال لا يزالون يعلقون على جدران بيوتهم مفاتيح منازلهم في غرناطة... وفي كل يوم تعود إلى خواطرهم أفراح وعادات، ولا سيما زهو لن يعرفوه في المنفى...".
وكأن أمين معلوف حمل معهم حلمهم... وحمل معهم ألمهم وحزنهم... وسافر معهم بعيداً في تطوافهم... وكأنه ليون الأفريقي... يقطف من الأمل حلماً... ومن التاريخ صوراً... ومن الخيال باقة... يودعها سطوراً تحمل بصمات قدر الإنسان... القاهر لهذا الإنسان.
