يحاول إدوارد سعيد في هذا الكتاب الإجابة على التساؤلات التي أثارها كتابه السابق "الاستشراق" واستكمال تلك التساؤلات. والأهم من ذلك محاولته إلقاء الضوء على أدب ونقد جديدن كانا قد بزغا بعد مرحلة الاستعمار أي بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية حيث برز إنسان العالم الثالث (الأفارقة والآسيويون عرباً وغير عرب)، هؤلاء الذين كانوا دائماً موضوعاً لعلم الإنسان الغربي وكانوا في النصوص الثقافية الدليل السلبي على شتى أنواع الأفكار حول الشعوب غير الادبية الأقل تطوراً والتي ظلت جواهرها ثابتة رغم التاريخ، يصبح هؤلاء خلاقين لآدابهم وتواريخهم الخاصة، كما يصبحون أيضاً قراء ناقدين لسجل المحفوظات الغربي. على ضوء تلك النظرية يعيد إدوارد سعيد قراءة إنتاج الفكر الغربي عبر مائتي عام بطريقة ذكية من خلال تحليل وسفسطة فكرية ونفاذ بصيرة وألمعية. مثل أعيان كاموا حيث يفسر المكونات الأساسية لعمل كاموا في إطار إشكاليات معرفية مرتبطة بمنظور كامو الامبريالي. إلى جانب قراءته لفيردي وجين أوسنن، حيث ومن خلال أسلوبه العلمي التحليلي يسلح من هؤلاء الذين يمثلون عمالقة الفكر الغربي الأهاب المغفل، ويكشف منظورهم الحاقد المتعالي اللاإنساني المشبع بروح العنصرية والتفوقية والاستغلال الاقتصادي والعرقي.
