والحرف عند علماء النحو قسيم الاسم والفعل، ولا يقلّ أهميةً عنهما، فلولاه لتفككت اللغة، وتقطعت أوصالها، إذ لكل حرف معنىً لا يقوم به معنى حرف آخر؛ ولذلك قدّم المراديُّ لكتابه (الجنى الداني في حروف المعاني) بقوله: ((فإنه لما كانت مقاصد كلام العرب على اختلاف صنوفه، مبنياً أكثرها على معاني حروفه، صرفت الهمم إلى تحصيلها، ومعرفة جملتها وتفصيلها، وهي مع قلتها، وتيسر الوقوف على جملتها، قد كثر دورها، وبعد غورها، فعزّت على الأذهان معانيها، وأبت الإذعان إلا لمن يعانيها))( )، وقال ابن الأثير عن معاني الحروف: ((وهذا موضع لطيف المأخذ، دقيق المغزى))( )، وقال السيوطي: ((اعلم أن معرفة ذلك من المهمات المطلوبة لاختلاف مواقعها، ولهذا يختلف الكلام والاستنباط بحسبها)) .( )،
