يتناول هذا الكتاب - الأول من نوعه - إجمالا، جانبا مجهولا من حرب الجزائر ، يتعلق بالوجه الآخر للنزاع كما حدث داخل فرنسا. وجه طبعته، كما هو الشأن في الجهة الأخرى من البحر الأبيض المتوسط، العمليات المسلحة و الاغتيالات والقمع. لقد شكل المهاجرون الجزائريون، المتزايدة أعدادهم و الصعبة أحوال معاشهم و عملهم بفرنسا بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية، رهان «معركة باريس» التي بلغت ذروة عنفها في الفترة بين 1954 و 1962. كما أن السيطرة على هؤلاء الأهالي من السكان كانت غاية السلطات الفرنسية التي حرصت على الإبقاء على « فرنسيي الجزائر المسلمين » بمنأى عن دوائر الوعي الوطنية من ناحية، و هدفا للتنظيمين النديين المتمثلين في الحركة الوطنية الجزائرية التابعة لمصالي الحاج و جبهة التحرير الوطني حديثة النشأة و اللذين دخلا في اقتتال مفتوح و دامي. و عليه، فقد تضاعف كفاح التحرير في فرنسا كما في الجزائر بحرب أهلية شعواء. و في قلب تلك العمليات التي بلغت حدتها بالقمع الوحشي الذي عرفته مظاهرات 17 أكتوبر 1961، سنصادف شخصية موريس بابون الذي لعب دورا حاسما بصفته مديرا عاما لشرطة باريس. و قد استطاعت ليندة عميري أن تطلع بطريقة استثنائية على محفوظات بابون الخاصة و التي تكشف بجلاء و فجاجة وحشية القمع. إن كتاب ليندة عميري، بما يحويه من مصادر و وثائق جادة، يمثل إسهاما نوعيا هاما في البحث في ذاكرة حرب الجزائر.
