هو دراسة عن النُخب الجزائرية خلال حقبة الاستعمار الفرنسي (خلال الفترة 1892-1942).
يضع مؤلف الكتاب هذه النخب في صنفين، ويَذكُر أن الصنف الأول يتمثّل بالنخب الجزائرية التقليدية، لأنها كانت موجودة حتى ما قبل الاحتلال الفرنسي، واستمرت على الأقل خلال الحقبة المحددة لهذا الكتاب، وشملت برجوازية المدينة قضاةً، ومفتين، وأئمة، وتجارًا، وحرفيين - وكانوا أصحاب كلمة مسموعة - والأعيان، إضافة إلى أرستقراطيي الريف، وهم الأشراف: الأجواد أو نبلاء السيف، والمرابطون أو شيوخ الزوايا، يضاف إليهم القياد، والآغاوات، والباشاوات، والمحاربون الجزائريون القدامى في صفوف الجيش الفرنسي. أمّا الصنف الثاني، فهو يتمثّل بالنخب الجزائرية الجديدة التي ظهرت خلال حقبة الاستعمار الفرنسي.
