هذا الكتاب يضع تحت المجهر وقائع احتدام الصراع بين جيش التحرير الوطني ووحدات النخبة في الجيش الفرنسي سنة 1958 على الحدود الجزائرية - التونسية في إطار ما سمي بـ « حرب الحدود »، ويتناول الرهانات العسكرية الفعلية في تلك المناطق ويسلط الأضواء على كثير مـن الملابسات، بدءا بخلفية إنجاز خط موريس وأسرار معركة جبل الواسطـة وما تلاها، وحقيقة العدوان على قرية ساقية سيدي يوسف التونسية و معركـة سوق أهراس ومحنة الفيلق الرابع وحقيقة القاعدة الشرقية وتدويل القضية الجزائرية. يعالج الكتاب أيضا انقلاب 13 ماي 1958 والإطاحة بالجمهورية الرابعة ودور ديغول الخفي قبل وأثناء هذا الانقلاب الذي اعتمد بالأساس على ضباط الجيش الفرنسي في الجزائر. كما يعرج على حيثيات وقائع الثورة، من مقتل عبان رمضان مرورا بملابسات إنشاء قيادة العمليات العسكرية بالشرق وحـلها، وتفكيك القاعدة الشرقية، وانتهاء بقضية « انقلاب العقـداء » وظروف إنشاء الحكومة المؤقتة للجمهورية الجزائرية واجتماع « عقداء الداخل » بالطاهير في الولاية الثانية.
