أثار موضوع الإسلام والعلمانية في تركيا المعاصرة اهتمام الكُتاب والباحثين منذ عدة عقود من الزمن. وقد ازداد هذا الاهتمام بشكل ملحوظ بعد فوز حزب الرفاه الإسلامي الذي يترأسه نجم الدين أربكان في الانتخابات البرلمانية التركية التي جرت في كانون الأول 1995، الأمر الذي مهد لتشكيل حكومة ائتلافية في حزيران 1996 برئاسته، وكانت تلك المرة الأولى التي يصل فيها حزب إسلامي إلى رئاسة الحكومة في تركيا العلمانية. وفي سياق ذلك الاهتمام أيضاً تم التطرق إلى موقف القوى العلمانية في تركيا، ومن بينها المؤسسة العسكرية، تجاه الإسلام والحراك الإسلامي في البلاد. وقد انقسمت ميول الكُتاب والباحثين في هذا الباب ما بين مدافع عن النظام القائم والقوى العلمانية، ومتعاطفٍ مع ذلك الحراك وغاياته، أو محايد بينهما، كما تباينت أعمالهم من حيث مدى دقة المعلومات والتفاصيل. ومن خلال متابعة العديد من الكتب والدراسات في هذا المجال ارتأيت أن تكون لي مساهمةٍ متواضعة في الموضوع من خلال هذا الكتاب الذي يتابع موقف المؤسسة العسكرية في تركيا تجاه الإسلام والحراك الإسلامي في هذا البلد منذ خمسينات القرن العشرين ولغاية الإطاحة بحكومة أربكان في حزيران 1997. ومن المعروف أن المؤسسة العسكرية التركية من أبرز القوى المدافعة عن النظام العلماني الذي أقامه مصطفى كمال أتاتورك، مؤسس الجمهورية التركية في عام 1923 وأول رئيس لها حتى وفاته عام 1938. والواقع أن تلك المؤسسة عدّت نفسها حارسةً للنظام القائم والمبادىء الأتاتوركية وأعلنت عن ذلك مراراً، وتحرّكت على هذا الأساس في عدة حالات كانت الدولة والنظام العلماني خلالها في مواجهة`` تهديد `` صريح أو كامِن، حسب تصور قادة تلك المؤسسة. ومن الأمثلة البارزة على ذلك الانقلابات العسكرية الأربعة التي شهدتها تركيا في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، فضلاً عن الحرب ضد حزب العمال الكردستاني `` ب. ك. ك `` منذ عام 1984.
