أثار موضوع الإسلام والعلمانية في تركيا المعاصرة إهتمام الكُتاب والباحثين منذ عدة عقود من الزمن، وقد ازداد هذا الإهتمام بشكل ملحوظ بعد فوز حزب الرفاه الإسلامي الذي يترأسه نجم الدين أربكان في الإنتخابات البرلمانية التركية التي جرت في كانون الأول 1995، الأمر الذي مهد لتشكيل حكومة إئتلافية في حزيران 1996 برئاسته، وكانت تلك المرة الأولى التي يصل فيها حزب إسلامي إلى رئاسة الحكومة في تركيا العلمانية.
يتألف هذا الكتاب من تمهيد وستة فصول، جاء التمهيد تحت عنوان "من الدولة العثمانية إلى تركيا العثمانية"، وهو بمثابة مدخل إلى موضوع الكتاب، وقد تناولتُ فيه قيام النظام العلماني في تركيا، وطبيعة العلمانية الكمالية التي اقتدت بالعلمانية الفرنسية، وفُرضت على المجتمع "من الأعلى"، واتخذت موقفاً مُتشدّداً تجاه الإسلام وأشكال التعبير عنه، وما ترتب على ذلك من إنقسام مجتمعي وثقافي في تركي ما بين مناصرين للعلمانية ومناهضين لها.
وخُصص الفصل الأول لدراسة دور الجيش التركي بوصفه "حارساً" للمبادئ الأتاتوركية، ويُغطي الفصل الثاني موضوع الإنبعاث الإسلامي في تركيا منذ تولي الحزب الديمقراطي السلطة عام 1950، وتابعتُ في الفصل الثالث موقف الجيش من الإسلام والتيار الإسلامي في تركيا إبان عقدي الستينات والسبعينات.
ولما كانت الحقبة الأوزالية واحدة من أهم الحقب في تركيا في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين على صيد السياستين الداخلية والخارجية لهذا البلد فقد تم تناولها بشكلٍ مُركّز في الفصل الخامس، أما الفصل السادس والأخير من هذا الكتاب فقد خُصص لدراسة موقف المؤسسة العسكرية من حزب الرفاه الإسلامي.
