يمكن القول أن عملاً بهذا الحجم هو غير مسبوق، ولا يوجد إلا قليل جدا من المنشورات فى موضوع المعجم. ولتفسير ذلك، فإن الإتحاد الجغرافى الدولى IGU، وهو أكبر كيان جغرافى دولى، أصدر دليلا تصنيفيا Directory للجغرافيين فى العالم مرتين، الأولى فى عام 1952، والثانية فى عام 1991، وفضلا عن الفترة الزمنية التى انقضت على نشرهما، فإن أيا منهما لم يقدم الحد الأدنى المطلوب بشأن هذا الحصر، ويكفى أن الدليل لم يذكر فى طبعة 1991 سوى جامعة مصرية واحدة هى جامعة المنيا، إضافة إلى أن الحصر اقتصر على الاسم وبيانات سريعة خاصة بالأفراد كالتخصص ومكان العمل، ولا شئ عن المسيرة العلمية للجغرافيين ولو بإيجاز
