الاستقراء لغة : هو التتبع - وجاءت من استقراء الأمر - أى تتبعه لمعرفة أحواله وعرفه جون إستيوارت مل بأنه : نوع خاص من الحجج تكون فيه المقدمات قضايا مفردة الموضوع ومستقاة من الملاحظة والتجربة (26)وهذا التعريف يجعل الاستقراء فى مقابل الاستنباط الذى يأخذ الحقيقة الكلية ليستنتج منها الحقائق الجزئية ، لذلك يعتبره بعض الفلاسفة مرحلة لاحقة للاستقراء لأن هذه الحقيقة الكلية الاستنباطية إنما تأتى بطريق الاستقراء وتلزم عنه ، لذلك يرى البعض أن التمييز بين الاستنباط والاستقراء ليس أساسيا أو جوهريا
