الكاتب يرى في كتابه هذا أن اللغة لا يصح أن تدرس على أنها أداة عقلية فحسب؛ لأن الإنسان كما يتكلم ليصوغ أفكاره، فإنه يتكلم ليؤثر، وليعبر عن إحساسه وشعوره وعواطفه، فهو يعبر باللغة عن نفسه، كما يعبر عن آرائه .بل إنه يمكن القول بأن التعبير عن أية فكرة؛ لا يخلو مطلقاً من لون عاطفي، فإننا لا نستطيع أن نقرأ دون أن نحس بقشعريرة تسري في أجسامنا، خبر جريمة عادية وقعت أمام منزلنا، وإننا مثلا حين ننطق بجملة مثل: " خالد يضرب عليا " نحس في أنفسنا بعواطف مختلفة من الخنق، أو الشماتة، أو التهديد، أو الغضب، أو الرضا، أو التشجيع، أو القبول، أو الدهشة، وذلك تبعاً لما إذا كان خالد وعلي ابنيّ، أو طفلين غريبين عنا وتبعا لسنهما وقوتهما وتبعا لميولنا واتجاهاتنا، وتبعا لظروف أخرى كثيرة يمكن تصورها بسهولة .
