الرواية تُعد من روايات السيرة الذاتية ، وتستعرض رحلة البطل إلى أمريكا، أرض الفرص التى حَلم طيلة عقود أن تأتى.. فى البدء حمل فكرًا مغايرًا لأمريكيين يختلفون فى نظرتهم إلينا كما تحمله النظرة الرسمية، لكن صديقته الأمريكية التى التقاها بمجرد خروجه من المطار استقبلته فى بيتها وهى لا تعرفه، وآوته عندما لم يكن له مسكن، وشاركته رحلة البحث عن أخيه، وتكفلت بمصاريفه من مالها الخاص حتى وقف على قدميه فى بلد جاءه مهاجرًا وهو لا يدرى مصيره فيه، ومنحته من الحب والحنان والعطف الكثير، كانت نِعم الأمريكية التى تفوح منها رائحة الطيب، حتى رحلت فى سكينة وهدوء إلى قبرها الذى ظلَّ يضىء لبطلنا عتمات الليل، وظلَّت ذكراها عبقة تمنحه رائحة الريحان وحب الحياة.
