عد هذا الكتاب أحد أهم الكتب التي تعني بالقواعد والضوابط الفقهية والتي عرفت فيما بعد بأصول الفقه، وهذا هو الجزء الأول من الكتاب والذي يبدأ بالتعريف بمؤلفي الكتاب، والبحث في معنى أصول الفقه التركيبي قبل التسمية، والبحث في تعريف معنى أصول الفقه اللقبي، والبحث في الفرق بين المعاني وتعريفها وما بينهما من النسب. كما يتطرق لتعريف الفقه لغة واصطلاحاً. ثم يقدم مقدمة المنهاج والتي تضم بابان، يتناول الباب الأول الحكم وينقسم إلى فصول يتحدث الفصل الأول عن تعريف الحكم، وتعريف الخطاب الشرعي. أما الفصل الثاني فيتحدث عن تقسيمات الحكم سواء كان الحكم باعتبار ذات الحكم، أو للحكم باعتبار الحسن والقبح، أو للحكم إلى السبب والمسبب كما تناول الكتاب أيضا العديد من الموضوعات نذكر منها: تحقيق هام للشارح في بيان أن الشيخ أبي الحسن الأشعري ليس من منكري الصيغ والمفهوم على ما اعتقده معظم النقلة، والتعارض بين مفهوم الأسم والصفة، وقاعدة في بيان أن أصل وضع الصفة أن تجىء للتخصيص أو التوضيح، وبيان أنها قد تجىء لمجرد الثناء أو الذم أو التوكيد أو التحنن، ولا مفهوم لها عندئذ. ثم يذكر مفهوم العلماء في مفهوم العدد وأدلتهم. وأن النص إما أن يستقل بإفادة الحكم أو لا.
