رواية دموع في الريف ومنها نقرأ: "لقد دخل الشك قلب ميرفت، وبعد أن فكت قيودها بمساعدة المربية٬ وعلامات الضرب ظاهرة علي جسدها وملابسها الرثة، ودون طعام منذ يومين لم تطعم. حينما تراها لا تعلم هل هي ميرفت زهرة الوادي من جمالها، حينما كانت تضحك كأنه نغم وورود، لقد انتهت تحطمت، أصبحت كامرأة في السبعين من الظلم الذي نزل عليها. قالت بصوتها اليائس الضعيف أحضري لي ملابسي، فملابسها امتلات بالأتربة فهي منذ يومين أو أكثر لم تغتسل أو تأكل الطعام."
