ضاء مصباح السيارة شيئًا قليلًا، ضوء أصفر متقلب، ضوء يدفع من خلفه صوتًا لماكينة قديمة، تصطك تروسها من أربطة مهترئة ورذاذ من الزيت المتناثر. لم يظهر القمر في السماء حينها، كانت الغيوم تُخفيه، فقد كانت ليلة مظلمة، وقد جنّ الليل بعد منتصفه بشيء من السكون، هدوء يفارق أضواء الشوارع، إلى الأروقة التي اكتست بأوراق الشجر المتساقط، تلك الأوراق الخضراء التي اتسمت بالصفرة الهزيلة. كانت الأضواء مطفأة والعجلات تمر من تلك البوابة الحديدية الصدئة، وعلى جانبها شعار بهتت ألوانه ليظهر أن تلك السيارة لم تكن إحدى سيارات الطاقم المميز، المخصص لذلك المكان.
