اسْتَوْعَب التَّوحيدي ثقافة عَصْره ، وما كان يَمُوجُ به من تَيَّارات واتِّجاهات فِكْرِية وفَلْسَفية وأَدَبية ونَقْدِية ، وأُتِيحَ له بِما امْتَلَكَه من قُدْرة بَيَانِية وذَوْق أَدبي ، أنْ يُعَبِّر عن ثقافة هذا العَصْر ويَنْطِق بِلِسَانِها ، وكان من ثَمَرة ذلك طَرْحُه للكثير من قضايا النَّقد ، وعلى الرُّغم من تَفَرُّق هذه الآراء والنَّظرات في مَواضع مُخْتَلفة من كُتُبه إلا أنَّها تَنْتَظِم انْتِظاماً واضحاً في شَكْل اتِّجاهات نَقْدِيَّة رَئِيسَة وهي ( الاتِّجاه اللُّغوي ، والاتِّجاه الجَمَالي ، والاتِّجاه المَوْضُوعاتي ) ، فَعَبَّرت هذه الاتجاهات عن حَقِيقة الفِكْر النَّقْدي لَدَيه من نَاحِية ، وعَبَّرت في الوقت ذاته عن الاتِّجاهات العَامة للنَّقد الأَدَبي القَديم في عَصْره وما سَبَقه أو لَحِقَه بِقَلِيل .
