يستعرض هذا الكتاب مختلف وجوه المقاربة، ويقدم الأمثلة التّي تمكّن الطلبة من التعوّد على أصناف النقد الكبرى (التقعيديّة والجماليّة والتفسيريّة) وعلى القضايا الكبرى (العلاقات بين النقد والعلم وبين النقد والأدب)... وعلى الإتّجاهات المنهجيّة الرئيسيّة (أصناف النقد الموسوعيّة والهرمينوطيقيّة والشّكليّة).
وقد أولى هذا العمل التأليفيّ إهتماماً خاصاً لأسلوب الناقد وخصائص مختلف أصناف الخطاب (الجامعي والصحافيّ والجمالي) وسوسيولوجيّة الحقل الأدبيّ، وأعمال "كريستيفا" و"ريكور" الأخيرة إلخ.
وفيه كشف لمختلف أصناف النقد وما حصل فيها من التطوّر بالتركيز على النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، ويسترعي عناية المختّصين في الأدب لأنه بحث في تاريخ الأفكار وفي الأدب وفي المجتمع.
ويتضمن الكتاب بعض التحاليل والممارسات النقديّة ذات البعد التعليمي الذي يجسّد تطبيقيّاً، مناهج أو مبادئ أو مفاهيم سبق تقديمها تقديماً نظرياً قد يبقى عند القارئ غائماً من دون الأمثلة التطبيقيّة لتوضيحه وتجسيده، ووضعنا في آخر كلّ فصل ملخّصاً لأهمّ معانيه وإختبار لمدى إستيعاب مسائله.
ونظراً إلى طبيعة الكتاب العلميّة فقد حرصنا في تعريب هذا الكتاب على توخّي التأنّي في العمل والوفاء بالمعنى في أدقّ جزئيّاته مراعين في أداء المعنى روح التركيب العربي وخصائص الجملة العربية، ووضعنا قاموساً خاصاً بالمصطلحات وحاولنا أن نحدّد لها دلالتها الإصطلاحيّة لا سيما حملته في المطلق أو في غير هذا المصنّف ولكن كما حملته في سياقها الإصطلاحي في هذا الكتاب.
