لاشك أنه ليس على كاتب العربية أن يكون من جهابذة اللغة، الارسخين في علومها، المتضلّعين من فنونها، المحيطين بأصولها وفروعها، لكنه لا معدل له على كل حال، أن يلم بأهم قواعدها، ويتعرف أظهر مذاهبها، ويتبيّن أشهر أساليبها، ذلك لتبأر كتابته من شوائب الخطأ، وتتنزه عن الابتذال واللغو، وإلا فقد ينأى عن الفصحى، أي نأي، ويدنو من العاميّة، أيّ دنو! وإذا استقرّ هذا، فلسنا مع النقّاد الذين أسرفوا على أنفسهم فاعتزّوا بعلمهم وإحاطتهم، وقطعوا بفساد كثير مما جرت به أقلام الكتاب، وطاعت به ألسنتهم، بلا تأمل، أو فضل تثبت وتحقيق. فقد اقتادهم هذا أن يحجروا من كلام الكتاب، الصحيح الظاهر، ويمنعوا من أساليبهم المستقيم السائغ، وفي ذلك ما فيه من تنفير للكتاب بلغتهم، وصرفهم عن إتقانها، وثنيهم عن المضيّ في تدارك ما ينبغي أن يُحصوه من مسائلها، أو يستنبطوه من حقائقها، من حيث قصدوا إلى إغارئهم بها، وإرهاف عازئمهم على تحصيلها.
