يعنى علم إسقاط الخرائط بتمثيل سطح الأرض المنحني على سطح مستوي، وعليه يعدُّ نظام الإسقاط الهيكل الرياضي لأي خريطة. وهناك طرائق كثيرة لهذا التمثيل نتج عنها عدد كبير من أنواع الإسقاطات، كل يتميز بخاصية معينة من حيث الدقة ومظهر الخريطة. لذلك هناك معايير لاختيار الإسقاط المناسب لأي خريطة. ازدادت أهمية هذا العلم مع ظهور الأنظمة الكارتوغرافية المؤتمتة (Automated Cartography Systems)، ونظم المعلومات الجغرافية GIS، بالإضافة إلى تطور تقنيات وطرق جمع البيانات المكانية رقمياً، كالأجهزة المساحية الرقمية، وتقنيات التصوير الجوي، والاستشعار عن بعد، ونظام تحديد المواقع العالمي GPS. وهذا ما أدى إلى تعدد مصادر البيانات المكانية ومن ثم مرجعيات نظم الإحداثيات مما يتطلب عملية توحيد المساقط. يعدُّ هذا الكتاب مرجعاً للمهتمين بالخرائط ونظم المعلومات الجغرافية
