همة الدراسة ليست جمع شذرات أحداث الملحمة من أفواه المغنيين لإعطاء صورة شبه متكاملة، إنما الانطلاقة كانت في الأساس اثبات تعددية الثقافات المحلية في الروايات حسب المناطق، فلكل منطقة روايتها الخاصة التي تلبي احتياجات الناس، وليس البحث عن رواية واحدة مكتملة أقرب إلى الواقع التاريخي، هذا من مهمة الباحث المؤرخ، وليست مهمة هذه الدراسة، لأن أدوات البحث مختلفة في الحقلين، حقل علم التاريخ وحقل الدراسات الأدبية/ الشفهية. حاولت أن لا أسكن في تاريخ العشائر وأنسابها، مستبعداً النظرة التبجيلية والتحقيرية معاً للماضي، كما أنني استبعدت النظرة العقائدية الواحدية لمصلحة تعددية النظرة، ومقاربة الموضوع من زوايا مختلفة، بمعنى، لكل سؤال، عديد الأجوبة، وهذه الأجوبة وجهات نظر تؤمن بيئة مناسبة للحوار بحيث لا يقصي أحداها الأخرى، وجاهدت في الوقت نفسه أن لا يسكن التاريخ فيّ، مقتنعاً أن قراءة التراث، أي تراث كان، جبهة صراع ثقافي وأيديولوجي، فوقفت موقفاً حيادياً رغم أنني مقتنع بأن الحياد مجرد فكرة، وهمية، مثالية، براغماتية، وقد لا تكون متوفرة في أغلب الدراسات التي تدّعي الحياد، خاصة في هذه المرحلة.
