شهد النصف الثاني من القرن السابع عشر مأساة إنسانيَّة مدويَّة، كانت بطلتها امرأة فرنسيَّة عفيفة كريمة النفس فائقة الجمال تُدعى «المركيزة ده جنج»، والتي تكهَّنت لها إحدى الكاهنات بالموت مقتولة في أوج شبابها. يحكي لنا ألكسندر ديماس حكاية عائلة «ده جنج» التي شغلت الناس طويلًا بما اشتملت عليه من فظائع؛ وهل هناك أفظع من أن تدفع المرأة الفاضلة حياتها ثمنًا لإخلاصها وترفُّعها عن الرذائل؟ وبينما يشعر القارئ أن البشاعة قد بلغت منتهاها، إذ به يجد نفسه إزاء تلقِّي جرعة أكبر من الأسى في قصة الضحية الثانية «بياتريس سنسي» الفتاة الرومانيَّة الصغيرة التي لم يشفع لها عند قضاة العدل براءتها ونقاء سريرتها، فقُتلت مرَّتين؛ كيف ذلك؟ لنقرأ الحكاية.
