في وقتٍ قريبٍ من العصور الوسطى، حدثت مأساةٌ إنسانيةٌ ضخمة، كان لها صدى واسعاً في جميع الأوساط، وقد حدثت هذه المأساة في النصف الثاني من القرن السابع عشر، حيث كانت بطلة أحداثها امرأةٌ فرنسيةٌ جميلة جداً، وكانت عزيزة النفس، وعفيفة، وكريمة، واسمها "المركيزة ده جنج"، وقد تنبأت لها إحدى الكاهنات بأنها ستموت وهي في زهرة شبابها، وأنها ستموت مقتولةً، وفي هذه الرواية، يروي لنا الكاتب "ألكسندر ديماس" قصة عائلة "ده جنج"، التي تحدث بها الناس طويلاً وانشغلوا بها كثيراً لما تضمنته هذه القصة من فظائع كثيرة، حيث دفعت فيه "المركيزة ده جنج" ثمناً باهظاً مقابل ترفعها عن فعل الرذائل وإخلاصها، وهذا الثمن كان حياتها، وبينما ينهمك القارئ أثناء متابعته للأحداث، ويشعر بأن البشاعة قد وصلت إلى أقصى حدودها، يجد نفسه مرةً أخرى أمام جرعةٍ أكبر من المأساة والحزن، ويتجسد هذا في قصة "بياتريس سنس"، الضحية الثانية، وهي فتاةٌ صغيرةٌ رومانية، لم يشفع لها نقاء قلبها وصفاء نيتها وبراءتها عند قضاة العدل، فقتلت مرتين، ولكن كيف كان هذا؟ هذا ما ستكشفه الحكاية المكتوبة في صفحات هذا الكتاب.
