يتناول الكاتب جورج حنا في هذا الكتاب قصة الإنسان منذ البداية، حيث يبدأ بالحديث عن نشوء الحياة، ونشوء الحضارات والممالك، ويحدثنا عن اليهودية على مسرح التاريخ، والحضارة الإغريقية، وروما، وآسيا، وملكوت السماوات ومملكة المسيح، وينتقل بعد ذلك للحديث عن الإسلام والتفاعل بين الشرق والغرب في الحروب الصليبية والقرون الوسطى المظلمة وسيادة الكنيسة، ثم عصر النهضة والانبعاث، وعصر الغليان الديني وثورة لوثيروس، ثم الديمقراطية والبورجوازية التي حلت محل الإقطاعية، ثم هوس الاستعمار، وصولًا للثورة الفرنسية والتقدم العلمي في حضارة القرن التاسع عشر، وينتهي بالحديث عن الثورة الروسية الاشتراكية. فالكتاب في المجمل هو تتبع لخط سير التاريخ منذ نشوء الحياة.
