هناك دودةٌ وحيدة -فقط- استطعمَتْ، فاستوطنتْ وقضمت ما تيسّر من اللّحم بِنَهم، ثمّ انكفأت تنتظر شركاءَ في المسكن، لكنّ أحدًا لم يعقبها، رغمَ أنّ الجثّة داومت على إصدار أصوات كلّما مرّت دودة، وكانت تنتفضُ أحيانًا؛كي تجعلها تظنّ أنّها جثةٌ حيّة، دُفِنت حديثًا. أُصيبت الدّودةُ بنوبات اكتئاب من الوحدة، فغادرت الجثّة، إلّا أنّها لم تتكيّف مع الدّيدان في ما بعد، فقد عامَلْنَها معاملةَ كائنٍ مُختلِف عمّا كانتْ عليه قبلَ أن تستوطنَ الجثّة، إذ نما شعرٌ على رأسِها، وأسفلَ بطنِها بقليل. قرّرت أن تكتشف العالَم الخارجيّ، وتبحثَ عن أنيسٍ أيضًا، فشقّت التّراب نحوَ الأعلى، وصعدت إلى سطح الأرض، بكتْها الجثّةُ وهي تسلك طرُقًا متعرِّجةً، متخفّيةً كي لا تسقط فريسةً لكائناتٍ أخرجها الصّيفُ من مخابئها.
