بلاد الذهب الجبلية في كاليفورنيا، سنة 1850 زمان فيه كان رجال يبيعون أنفسهم لأجل كيس من الذهب، ونساءً يبعن أجسادهن لأجل مكان يبتن فيه، وها هي آنجل لا تتوقع من الرجال سوى الخيانة والغدر، فبعدما بيعت للبغاء في صغرها، تبقى على قيد الحياة بإذكاء حقدها وكرهها، وأكثر ما تكرهه هو الرجال الذين يستغلونها، تاركين إياها خاوية وخامدة وجامدةً داخل كيانها. ثم تلتقي مايكل هوشع رجل ي بلاد الذهب الجبلية في كاليفورنيا، سنة 1850 زمان فيه كان رجال يبيعون أنفسهم لأجل كيس من الذهب، ونساءً يبعن أجسادهن لأجل مكان يبتن فيه، وها هي آنجل لا تتوقع من الرجال سوى الخيانة والغدر، فبعدما بيعت للبغاء في صغرها، تبقى على قيد الحياة بإذكاء حقدها وكرهها، وأكثر ما تكرهه هو الرجال الذين يستغلونها، تاركين إياها خاوية وخامدة وجامدةً داخل كيانها. ثم تلتقي مايكل هوشع رجل يلتمس قلب أبيه السماوي في كل شيء، فيلبي دعوة الله إلى التزوج بآنجل وإبداء الحب غير المشروط لها، وعلى مهل يوماً، بعد يوم، يتحدى كل توقع مُرِّ لدى آنجل، حتى يبدأ قلبها المتجمد يذوب، رغم مقاومتها، إنما تصحب استكانتها غير المتوقعة مشاعر ساحقة بعدم الإستحقاق وبالخوف. وهكذا تهرب آنجل فتعود إلى الظلام متنائيةً عن حب زوجها المُطارد لها، تروعها الحقيقة التي لا تعود تستطيع إنكارها: أن شفاءها الحاسم يجب أن يأتيها من ذاك الذي يحبها بعد أكثر مما يحبِّها مايكل هوشع ذاك الذي لن يدعها تفلت من يده أبداً. محاكاة قصصية بارعة لسفر هوشع، الحب المُحرر رواية بارعة مغيِّرة للحياة، محورّها محبة الله تعالى المفتدية غير المشروطة التي تخترق جميع الحدود والسِّدود، وتحطم أعتى القيود.
