في التكمِلة الدراماتيكيَّة لرواية ’’رجاء أمِّها‘‘، تقدِّم فرنسين ريڤرز قصَّة غنيَّةً وعميقةَ التأثير عن الأحزان الصامتة التي يمكن أن تمزِّقَ العائلة، وعن النعمة والغفران اللذين يمكن أن يشفيا حتَّى أعمَقَ الجروح. لم تكن نشأةُ الصغيرة كارولين أرُندِل ليِّنةً. فلمَّا كانت أمُّها هيلدَمارا تحت الحجر الصحِّيِّ داخل غرفتها بسبب السُّلِّ، كوَّنت علاقةً متينةً بجدَّتها مارتا بعدما انتقلَتِ الجدَّة لتعتنيَ بأهل البيت. ولكن حين تتفاقم التوتُّرات ما بين هيلدي ومارتا، تعتقد كارولين أنَّها هي السبب. وعندما ترجع هيلدي إلى العمل وتغادرُ مارتا، تتربَّى كارولين وأخوها بوصفهما طفلَين محجوزَين في عالمٍ استَولى عليه الخوف من الحرب الباردة. أتاحَتِ الجامعة لكارولين الفرصةَ كي تجدَ نفسَها، ولكنَّ مأساةً عائليَّةً زعزَعت استقلالَها الذي أحرزتُه مؤخَّرًا. فبدلَ أن تعود إلى البيت، قطعتْ كلَّ رباطٍ، وغاصَتْ في غياهِبِ حضارةِ سان فرنسيسكو المتهوِّرة. وعندما تظهرُ كارولين من جديدٍ بعد سنتَين، وهي في حالةٍ من الضَّلال غير مسبوقة، تعود على مضضٍ إلى عائلتِها لتعملَ على بناء حياة جديدةٍ لها ولابنتها ماي فلوَر دون. على غرار كارولين تمامًا، تُنشئ ماي فلوَر دون علاقةً بجدَّتها هيلدي أقوى من علاقتها بأمِّها، وهو ما سبَّبَ صدعًا آخر بعدُ ما بين الأجيال. ولكنْ إذ تكافحُ ماي فلوَر دون لتجنُّب أغلاط الذين سبَقوها، تقطعُ على نفسها عهدًا بأنْ تكونَ بطريقةٍ ما جسرًا ما بين النساء في عائلتها بدلَ السُّور الذي يفصل ما بينهنَّ. على مدى عقودٍ امتدَّت من خمسينيَّات القرن العشرين حتَّى يومنا هذا، تشكِّل رواية ’’حُلُمُ ابنتها‘‘ الفصلَ العاطفيَّ الأخير في قصَّة مغامراتٍ عائليَّة لا تُنسى عن التضحيات التي تبذلُها كلُّ أمِّ من أجل ابنتها، وعن طبيعة المحبَّة غير المشروطة بحدِّ ذاتها.
