تحلق بنا رواية الهشيم الى اكثر المناطق الإجتماعية عتمة في العراق وأكثرها تحريم, فهي كصاعقةٍ تنير طريق من تخدعه مظاهر المجتمع المقدسة, ومطرقة تهشّم بها رؤوس لطالما تسترت بالمقدس النقي.
الهشيم تعالج في سطورها الفلسفية البليغة العديد من التاباوات الإجتماعية المظلل عنها..
فهي متعددة الابعاد والمواضيع كأنها عربة ادبية تتجول بنا من عقدة أُوديب وعلاقة العداء بين الاب والإبن الى السادية المفرطة وانتهازية وزيف رجل الدين التي وصل بها الى التمادي بعذابات اقرب الاشخاص لها.
الرواية اشبه بالمرآة السوداء للمجتمع العراقي بشكل خاص وللمجتمع العربي بشكل عام, اذ تعكس الجانب الغامض للفرد العراقي من حيث زيف المشاعر وضياع الشخصية وتشظيها.. وتظهر الطبقية المتخفية خلف ستار المجتمع المثالي, وبالأخص تجاه المرأة.
الرواية واقعية ذات طابع غرائبي من خلال بعض المشاهد السيريالية, وايضاً تتخللها الحوارات الرومانسي والفلسفية على غرار روايات الادب الروسي.
