في هذه القصة نرى بطل الرواية وهو فتى يبلغ من العمر 10 سنوات ، جيجينو ، يريد أن يرتدي ملابس الكبار بأي ثمن وأن يكون رجل المجتمع الراقي. وجيجينو طفل مضحك وكاذب: يخترع الأكاذيب لإبهار أقرانه: وإنه يفتخر بوضع لا يمتلكه. و تصف القصة ، المقسمة إلى فصول ، الحيل الغريبة التي يستخدمها جيجينو لإثبات أنه يبلغ من العمر 20 عامًا. وللأسف فإن الولد يفشل فى النهاية ويتوب ويدرك قيمة طفولته. حيث لا يزال هناك وقت للنمو.
